"1966 Ford F350 Ramp Truck
""'Back in the day ramp trucks were it. Top teams from NASCAR, Road Racing, even F1 used to use ramp trucks. Today, the pro haulers have been largely replaced by teams running full 18 wheeler rigs. As professional tow companies use rollbacks and smaller race teams have moved more towards truck and trailer setups, ramp trucks are becoming more and more rare, though not impossible to find."" Thx nomoneymotorsports.com
For consignment, a 1966 Ford F350 ramp truck with a title verified 70,872 actual miles and carrying a fantastic prop in the form of a 1966 Mustang fastback fiberglass body with wheels. This unique setup has earned the truck a best of show award and other show wins.
Exterior
Coming at you, the blue cab is accented with a white grille, bumper, marker light housing, and roof, which also holds the requisite cab lights. The hood has flames that run in tandem towards the cowl, a theme that is carried over to the ramp itself as red tipped white flames lick over the entire length, hovering over the storage compartment doors without coloring them. The bed of the ramp is diamond steel plated, texture coated and an elongated window on the wind blocking front wall allows for ever important view of the cargo from the cabin. Out back, a prop Mustang with a hood scoop drag racing profile and wheels is secured by 2x4's underneath. From a distance, it will turn some heads but up close, it becomes more obvious it's all show and no go! Imperfections on the truck are noted as some uneven body filler in several areas including the door jambs.
Interior
Painted steel inner doors would have been standard on working F350's and the blue here is color keyed to the exterior. A gray vinyl bench shows some age and the integrated headrests flank a gap that allows full rear views. A sport steering wheel front a dashboard with original speedometer but added tach, temp, oil pressure, and voltmeter. The remaining knobs, buttons, and paint all show some patina, and the dash pad is cracked in several places. No carpet on the floor, just black paint surrounding the floor mounted shifter and handbrake.
Drivetrain
Driver quality conditions prevail under the flamed hood where we find a 352ci V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor and rated at 208 horsepower. A New Process 435 4-speed manual transmission is on board sending power to the Dana 70 rear with 4.88 gears. Drum brakes are employed front and back to slow this heavy truck down.
Undercarriage
Driver quality under here as well with a uniform coating of surface rust and heavy duty components throughout. Dual exhaust runs through stock style mufflers just before dumping under the truck and beefy leaf springs occupy the front and rear for suspension. There's some residual oil present on the pan, nearby pipes, and rear differential and there is a good bit of grime by the knuckles.
Drive-Ability
We take a seat in this long truck and start the V8. We'd love to get some air circulating in the cabin but the driver's window does not go down and the crank on the passenger side is missing. Getting out is tricky too as there are no inside door handles so you better have a friend nearby. During our test loop, we also note the throttle sticking during downshifting even when we're off the gas. The horn and wipers don't work but the remaining functions including gauges and lights operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The Bluth truck from Arrested Development had an interesting feature in the bed, namely an airport staircase. But this truck trumps that, especially for attending car shows, with a prop race car that cranks up the fun level high enough to earn this truck a ""most unique"" award at a recent car show. Seems like a fun way to transport a show car, too, or perhaps as initially intended, a real race car to the next SCCA event!
