"1964 Pontiac LeMans Convertible
Le Mans has always had a distinctive set of traditions. The drivers race in teams, sharing just one vehicle. The famous ""Le Mans Start"" originally had drivers start outside their vehicles, run to their cars, start the engines, and drive off. This proved to be dangerous, so the procedure was changed in 1970. Drivers then began the race inside their vehicles with their safety harnesses already in place. In 1971, the rule changed again, with drivers beginning the race with a rolling start. This rule still stands today. Because of its treacherous course, Le Mans has become a test bed for road safety innovation, and it brings in the biggest field of automotive manufacturing companies. Some of the world's most famous competitors from around the globe have come to Le Mans to take on its demanding course.
For consignment, a buttoned up version of the Pontiac LeMans convertible from 1964. Fully restored around the year 2000 and several areas of this car have garnered recent attention, like the rebuilt 389ci engine and rebuilt 4 speed transmission, and an upgrade to front disc brakes Blinding yellow paint, a very nice interior, and Pontiac rally wheels make this GTO wanna be a prime looker and cooker.
Exterior
We are early in the game here for the modern Pontiac so just a small beak is emerging on this dual horizontal headlight car. A shiny bumper below the split grille with GTO badging and a central trim piece complete the front end design, decidedly Pontiac, and a precursor of designs to come. Straight steel panels with well minded gaps form the shape of this 2 door convertible with nice paint throughout in a retina searing yellow with a clear coat. On the long hood is a Pontiac arrowhead in on as an accent to the hood bump along with faux chrome scoop vents. Rocker trimmings and window surrounds are beautifully preserved, and GTO badges adorn the bottoms of the front fenders as well as GTO block lettering on the rear of the quarter panels. Covering the passengers is a clean power actuated canvas convertible top with a slightly fogged rear window. On the back, the taillights are within a simple horizontal strip and are confined to the rear panel below the trunk. We will allow these lights to wander around the corners in later years of Pontiac design. Wonderful Pontiac Rally 2 wheels are all around, and dual exhaust tips on either peek out from under the lower rear quarter panel.
Interior
Molded black vinyl makes up the door panels and this emulates stitched panels, but alas is molded and looks really good. As does the seating which is in wide front low back buckets and a rear bench, all covered black vinyl with some chrome side trimmings accenting the seats in front. A low profile console with a ribbed aluminum topper races forward and houses a lockableglovebox, and the ball topped shifter. The dash has remains the original, now presenting with a light and airy feel that isobtained with machine turned stainless steel covering the instrument cluster of the dash front, and black faced gauges with chromed bezels are inserted. An aftermarket Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo has been fitted into the original radio opening and a trio of auxiliary gauges hangs below. A 3 spoke rally style wood rimmed steering wheel is fronting this dash which is topped with a nice black padded topper. Black carpeting floods the clean floors and is protected by lightly faded black GTO carpeted floor mats.
Drivetrain
Not original to this car, but certainly a pleasant sightis now a 389ci V8 circa 1966. Our consignor states that this mill was rebuilt approximately 3 years ago. Ribbed and polished aluminum valve covers are atop the 092 casting number cylinder heads and a single 4-barrel carburetor has been fitted under the polished and ribbed air cleaner lid. On back is a consignor-stated rebuilt Saginaw 4-speed manual transmission which sends power back to a 10-bolt rear axle. All looking good and well restored under this arrowhead badged hood.
Undercarriage
Flowmaster mufflers and dual exhaust highlight this lightly patinaed but structurally solid underside. Power front disc brakes, power rear drums, and power steering are there and there has been plenty of work performed on the underside to do some updating and performance enhancing. Providing that muscle ride is an independent coil sprung front suspension that works with a 4 link and coil spring rear suspension.
Drive-Ability
For a 1964 LeMans this car is a performer! A super quick starter, and on the test track it just wanted to go and go. Plenty of powerful acceleration, bias free braking, and good handling. All functions were working well on the control front, however the heater blower did not function during our extended trip around the Classic Auto Mall test track.
With work done and care taken, we now have a fine example of the 1964 LeMans simple in its early design, plenty of upgrades including the engine, and transmission, and straight rust free panels with a snazzy clean interior. True to LeMans tradition, speed is involved as well as endurance for this beauty from the mid 1960's.
