This Packard is one of 2,478 Super Eight Touring Sedans built for the 1938 model year and was acquired by the previous seller in 2003, reportedly from the family of a Packard dealer in Pennsylvania. The car is finished in dark navy blue over a tan interior, and power comes from a 320ci straight-eight paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Features include a rear-mounted luggage trunk, a heater, an electric clock, and rear window shades.
This series 1603 Super Eight is offered in Oregon by the current seller with factory manuals, service records from 2003 to present, and a clean Oregon title in the seller s name. The Super Eight shared styling elements with the range-topping Packard Twelve and was redesigned for 1937. Said to have been finished in light blue from the factory, this example underwent a repaint in its current darker hue under previous ownership. Features include a split windshield with a chrome center strip, a cormorant hood ornament, pontoon fenders, and an external trunk that can be seen up close in the gallery below along with window-mounted AACA and Packard Automobile Classics decals.
Each 1938 Super Eight rode on a 127in wheelbase. Body-colored steel wheels wear chrome beauty rings, worn hubcaps, and older Denman Super Safety 7/50-16 whitewall bias-ply tires. A spare wheel is mounted in the bustle-back trunk and can be seen in the gallery. An alignment is recommended by the seller.
The cabin is trimmed in tan cloth with a matching headliner, door panels, and carpets. Amenities include dual gloveboxes, a factory heater, rear passenger window shades, Packard-branded rubber front floor mats, and an inoperable radio. Wear in the front carpets can be seen up close in the gallery, and the door windlacing might need replacement. The damage in the front carpet is hidden by Packard original rubber mats.
A banjo-spoke steering wheel rests ahead of centrally-mounted instrumentation including a 100-mph speedometer, an electric clock, and gauges for fuel level and oil pressure. Just over 80k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, 1,300 of which were added by the seller in 17 years. Total mileage is unknown.
The 320ci straight-eight features a single Stromberg EE-23 carburetor and was rated at 120 horsepower when new. A leak in the oil pan gasket that was present when bought has been fixed. The spark plugs, spark wires have been changed; the carburator has been cleaned and all inernal components have been replaced by original ones, and the engine, air filter, horns, etc., have been repainted in their original colors.
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed manual transmission.
