For consignment, a 1937 Chevrolet Deluxe Business coupe, a street rodded version of the working man's car, now sporting a 394ci Rocket V8 and a unique paint job that's matched by a well done interior.
Exterior
Candy Lime Gold is a fitting name for the two stage paint that adorns this car and is completely uninterrupted by dress up body trim. The smooth panels glisten in the light only broken by the open engine compartment. There is a stunning tapered grille that's tall and flanked by side mounted torpedo headlights which are rimmed in chrome. The taillights have been moved higher up on the body playing bookends to an enormous trunk lid with only a handle to distract from the sea of lime gold coverage. Differing wheels from Rocket Racing occupy the front and rear, staggered in size as well and the staggered tire sizes keep the car level. In profile, it's all about arches, from the front and rear fenders arching over the wheels, to the cabin roof, right down to the deck lid. The metalwork and paint are fantastic, and we could not find any exterior imperfections.
Interior
An abstract lime gold snakeskin shape is applied to the black vinyl door panels in a clean and unique presentation. That design carries over the sides of the bench seat and then lime gold snakeskin stripes define the insert areas of the black seats, all in nice condition. Snakeskin texture is on the gold steering wheel on the stock column which leads directly to a column mounted racing tach with shift light. Body keyed paint covers the dashboard where a polished plate houses retro AutoMeter gauges in a compact display and a clock is embedded in the glove box door. A push button shifter from Powertrain Control Solutions sits on the floor and replaces any old school shifter you might expect and it's framed in a snakeskin case. Black loop carpet mats cover the floor perfectly and the black vinyl headliner is high and tight. All materials and colors carry over to the finished trunk which is spotless and houses the battery.
Drivetrain
Out on the rails is the Oldsmobile 394ci Rocket V8, polished and clean and in full show mode. It has a roller cam and lifters, and our consignor states that custom cylinder heads and a custom intake manifold cap things off. On top of it, six Holley 97 2-barrel carburetors, each with their own velocity stack in gold to match the valve covers, are in charge of air and fossil delivery. Polished headers shine bright and a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission with a shift kit backs the Olds motor up, sending power to the Pontiac rear axle. Power disc brakes are supplied up front and power drums in the back.
Undercarriage
All very clean underneath, uniformly black until you encounter the gold oil pan, where we find a drop of oil. The exhaust travels a short distance and exits behind the front fenders while leaf springs handle the suspension front and rear.
Drive-Ability
A tap of the gas and a turn of the key and the V8 unleashes an unearthly rumble that just woke up half of Morgantown. Then a push of a button with this nifty shifter and into Drive we go as we take this lime gold rod for a ride. It's got more than adequate power and tracks well and while not a slalom car, handles turn ins just fine even with 165/80/R15's in front. The brakes work well and so do all the gauges and operational items on the car. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is different. In fact, we've seen our share of street rods and don't think we've seen anything quite like this. From the unique color to the use of snakeskin trim inside, this presents as a fantastic build with a showy engine and tall stance. It's a turnkey show car and its comfortable ride is merely a bonus.
