Ford’s Mercury lineup, positioned between Ford and Lincoln, offered increased passenger room and an upscale presence. This beautifully restored 1948 Mercury Eight 2-Door Club Coupe exemplifies the final model year of Mercury’s prewar design. Originally purchased from a Lincoln-Mercury dealer in Mason City, Iowa by Maude Hanson, it was acquired by its second owner from her nephew in 1990. Shortly afterward, a restoration was undertaken, including a repaint in the original Midnight Blue and a high-quality interior restoration using correct materials from LeBaron Bonney.
The Mercury is powered by its original 100-horsepower, 230 CI “Flathead” V-8 engine, which was rebuilt during restoration, mated to a column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission. Desirable period features include twin Mercury-scripted Westinghouse amber fog lamps, a Fulton steel sun visor, twin chrome Mercury-scripted GE spotlights, chrome side mirrors, a factory fresh-air heater/ventilation system, and an OEM radio.
The paint, chrome, and interior remain in excellent condition. The frame and undercarriage are clean and restored, with stock suspension components, and the engine bay is tidy, featuring OEM components, including the factory air cleaner. Other highlights include front and rear bumper guards, a chrome “V8” exhaust deflector, correct steel wheels with smooth chrome Mercury hubcaps, and BF Goodrich Silvertown tires. The sale also includes a reproduction 1942-48 Mercury shop manual and a show board, making this 1948 Mercury Club Coupe a highly attractive collectible.
